WHAT IS IT?

  • HM Probation Service's Community Payback Scheme works with probationers to complete community payback orders. Participants in the programme are fully supervised and supported in their duties to provide community services, such as landscaping, gardening, painting, and repair works.

  • London Play Design has partnered with HM Probation Service to provide low-cost maintenance for adventure playgrounds and other outdoor community projects. Regular playground maintenance helps to reduce site hazards and increase the durability of timber play equipment, minimising the need for major, costly repairs on equipment in the future.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

  • Community Payback teams typically consist of 6 to 10 probationers and a qualified supervisor working a shift of 6 hours.

  • This usually happens once a week on a day the playground is closed to young people, with the option to add more days later in the programme.

HOW YOU BENEFIT

  • Community Payback Plus costs approximately 90% less than commercial contracts from gardening and maintenance companies.

  • We liaise with the maintenance team, creating and implementing work schedules and completing safety inspections so that you don’t have to.

  • For any major works needed, we will source and provide the required labour through our partnerships with volunteer groups.

  • Adventure playgrounds using this service have seen noticeable decreases in downtime from repairs while saving tens of thousands of pounds in maintenance costs.

  • The added value of having London Play Design manage this service on your behalf is that we can instruct and guide Community Payback teams to carry out more complex work (e.g., play structure building and repairs), which will conform to play safety regulations

Our services include:

  1. Liaison with Community Payback supervisors and teams to establish the service at the site, drawing up suitable risk assessments in partnership with the Community Payback team, and helping with agreements on work routines, hours, storage and other logistics.

  2. Drawing up a list of maintenance and repair jobs for the Community Payback team base on the annual inspection report and organisation needs. Then select and specify the best suppliers for suitable materials, tools, and spare parts.

  3. Working with the organisations to develop a low-cost design and maintenance plan delivering it with the community Payback, Corporate Volunteers and our team of professionals.

  4. Frequent visits to inspect the Community Payback team’s work to ensure it follows the design and maintenance plan and conforms to play safety regulations

  5. At the end of the year, LPD will show you exactly what was achieved with a detailed report on the works delivered
